Reading Grading Policy
As you have heard many times, “Reading is Fundamental”. Good reading habits improve student’s vocabulary and spelling skills as well as contribute to success in all subject areas.
Therefore, together, our mission during this sixth grade year is to foster life-long readers. In order to accomplish this goal, your child must read at least 15 minutes per night. They will have a “reading log” to keep track of their nightly reading. In order to receive credit for reading, they must turn in their reading logs each Monday, signed by a parent or guardian. The reading is also a responsibility exercise in that they have to remember to fill it out, get it signed and bring it in each Monday. You can help your child in this endeavor with some gentle reminders.
There are only 4 standard grades in reading class so it is imperative to turn in these reading logs each week as they count for one fourth of the reading grade. In addition, there will be book reports throughout the year.
Major Reading Grades
1. Vocabulary homework (usually Monday or Tuesday)
2. Reading logs (due on Monday)
3. Story test (usually on Fridays) hint: reread the story with your child on Thursday nights to improve comprehension, get a better test grade and it also counts towards the reading log for that night
4. Book Reports
